Smartphones now more data-hungry than tablets –study

Smartphones are now consuming more data than tablets, with Apple's iPhone 5 being the "hungriest," a new study has shown.
The study by mobile analytics firm Arieso also showed only one percent of users is consuming 40 percent of all data, with LTE starting to take its toll.
The study is based on data from a European telco, but "is relevant to operators around the world because relative consumption between device users remains constant between geographies," according to Arieso.

"Despite a surge in the market for tablets, smartphone users have overtaken tablet users in their thirst for mobile data for the first time. As overall mobile data consumption continues to rocket, driven by new devices and richer content, the study suggests that extreme users are beginning to move to new LTE networks, but there is no let up on existing networks," it said.
Study author and Arieso Chief Technology Officer Dr. Michael Flanagan said they found novel usage patterns, new technologies and regional idiosyncrasies "are conspiring to make life increasingly difficult for mobile operators trying to meet evolving customer expectations."
He added the capabilities of the newest smartphones are unleashing even greater user demand.
“Regardless of device type and operating system, there is very little variation in the usage ‘signature’ between smartphone users and between tablet users. From this we discover that voice-capable ‘phablets’ – like the Samsung Galaxy Note II - are currently being used like smartphones, not tablets. If you can use it to make a phone call, the ‘phablet’ won’t be much like a tablet at all," he said.

Tablets, phablets, smartphones
The study showed that of the 10 ten most data-voracious devices excluding dongles, six were smartphones, three were tablets and one a ‘phablet’ or phone-tablet.
Of the 125 devices studied, users of the latest iPhone again proved the most voracious data consumers, the study showed.
But for the first time in three years, this dominance is being challenged.
The study showed users of the iPhone 5 demand four times as much data as iPhone 3G users and 50 percent more than iPhone 4S users.
Users of iPhone 4S had been the most demanding in the 2012 study.
However, users of Samsung's Galaxy S III users generate - upload instead of download – photos, videos and other content.
And they do this with nearly four times the amount of data than iPhone 3G users, beating iPhone 5 users into third place on uplink data usage behind the Samsung Galaxy Note II.
In the rapidly growing tablet market, Samsung Tab 2 10.1 users asserted their dominance - demanding 20 percent more data than iPad users.
Dongles
While the study revealed that 1 percent of users consume 50 percent of the downlink data on 3G/UMTS networks last year, the hungriest 1 percent consume 40 percent this year.
Also for this year, the hungriest 0.1 percent consume almost 20 percent, the hungriest 10 percent consume 80 percent of the downlink data as LTE starts to make an impact.
“The region we studied this year has recently launched LTE, and we’re already seeing extreme users – especially those with dongles – starting to flock to 4G,” said Flanagan.
“In many respects, this is great news – LTE networks are doing their job. But the consumption levels and patterns of LTE use are very different to what operators could expect from 3G. It’s a complex, fluid and increasingly high stakes situation for operators to deal with. Having performance engineering solutions that can reveal the customer experience across multiple technologies is going to be vital to understanding this going forward,” he added.
The study also indicated operators cannot relax their focus on network planning, optimization and performance.
Flanagan said that for three years now, "we’ve seen how greater technical capabilities lead to greater data consumption by consumers."
He warned LTE alone may not solve the data problem and may even exacerbate it.
Asia Pacific
For the Asia Pacific, the study said network operators in developed Asia Pacific, specifically Southeast Asia, may experience similar data growth rates as in Latin America, but start from a much higher base.
It added many operators in this region are much more familiar with the demands of mobile data consumers and LTE networks.
"However, even with the new bandwidth and spectral efficiency provided by LTE, operators cannot sustain long term data growth projections. Accelerating effective small cell strategies ... will be critical if Asia Pacific operators are to avoid spectral exhaustion and the attention of regulators, as experienced recently in Singapore," it said.

Microsoft Skydrive gets better sharing features

Microsoft continued to enhance its cloud-based storage service SkyDrive by adding and improving new features such as sharing, drag-and-drop and HTML5 for SkyDrive.com.

SkyDrive group program manager Omar Shahine said these improved features were introduced to ring in the New Year.

"You now have a single, unified view into how each of your files is shared so you can more easily control who has access to your files. We’ve also added more HTML5 features for touch devices making the SkyDrive experience faster and more fluid across devices and we’ve introduced more drag-and-drop capabilities to make it easier to manage your files, photos and documents," Shahine said in a blog post (http://blogs.windows.com/skydrive/b/skydrive/archive/2013/01/08/improved-sharing-amp-new-html5-features-for-skydrive-com.aspx).

Shahine said SkyDrive.com now has an integrated view of sharing permissions, for those who share files on various platforms like email, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.

Users can now select a document and click Share in the command bar, then see all the different ways to share the item as well as who has access.

Another improvement is for selection of items for touch-based devices, where a user can select an item or multiple items by swiping on the item to the left or right.

Drag-and-drop support has also been improved, where users can now move files to anywhere in the hierarchy of SkyDrive.
Other improvements are under the hood which won’t be visible to the user, "but are designed to make SkyDrive.com even faster and more reliable," Shahine said

Flick jelly beans on your Android 4.2 device with this easter egg screensaver

Easter's still months away, but users of devices running Google's Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) might want to activate this Easter egg screensaver now.

The screensaver is part of Android 4.2's "daydreams," screensaver-like apps that can run when the device is docked or charging, Android Central said.

"Once that's done, the 'BeanFlinger' daydream will be unlocked. Find it with the rest under Settings > Display > Daydreams. This process should work on any Android 4.2 device that supports daydreams,".

Android Central said there are five stock daydreams available for Android 4.2 devices out of the box.

It said the feature can be accessed by tapping several times on the Android version number under Settings > About phone will bring up a large Jelly Bean smiley face.
"Hold down on that for a few seconds, and you'll be taken to a screen filled with even more happy beans," it said.

Samsung Galaxy S3 'sudden death' reported by some users

Owners of some Samsung Galaxy S III smartphones are complaining their devices are suddenly being bricked, a tech site reported over the weekend.

The Next Web quoted some owners who said the phone would no longer turn on again after being charged overnight, or after the screen is turned off.

"Users are reporting that the mainboards are the root of the problem and that the flash memory is becoming corrupted and failing, though the devices do seem to last somewhere between 150 and 200 days before dying,"

It added that while Samsung has not officially acknowledged the issue, users who sent their devices to repair centers say they have been told by employees the issue appears to affect many people recently.

The Next Web cited reports indicating Samsung is replacing the affected devices under warranty, whether or not people have rooted the devices or installed non-standard firmware.

But it also said Samsung is allegedly using the same revision for the mainboards, raising the possibility the problem may recur.
One comment cited by The Next Web said Samsung had told "multiple people" the issue is a hardware problem.

Google Designing 'X Phone' to compete big companies

Engineers at Motorola are hard at work on a sophisticated handset—known internally as the "X phone"—but the Google Inc. unit is running into some obstacles in its effort to provide more potent competition for Apple Inc., said people familiar with the matter.

Seven months after being acquired by Google for $12.5 billion, Motorola is designing its marquee handset with cutting-edge features to stand apart from existing phones when it is released next year, these people said.

The company says it will stop making devices for dozens of countries in order to focus on the biggest markets. Mobile-industry experts said that will have the effect of reducing Motorola's scale—and thus its leverage when negotiating over price with suppliers.

Motorola's Mr. Woodside said "scale is important but building great products is even more important."

Pieter Knook, a former executive at wireless carrier Vodafone PLC, said, "If you look at the handset makers other than Apple, it's a pretty grim story for anybody who's not Samsung" or Chinese companies building lower-priced smartphones.

Facebook starts their 1$ Messages

Facebook users in US maybe charged a one-time fee of one dollar to send a message to another user's inbox who they aren't friends with, in a new option that is being tested by the social media firm.

Currently, if you send a Facebook message to someone you're not connected to, it may end up in the 'Other' tab, an oft-overlooked subsection of the inbox that basically serves as a spam folder, depending on whether you have mutual connections.

The $1 cost seems steep just to shoot someone a message, but no matter. Facebook will surely drop the price if no one uses it. But the bigger point: This latest "test" shows that Facebook, eager to prove to Wall Street that it's building a cash-generating empire, is looking for more ways to add revenue streams not tied to advertising and, importantly, is trying to get more user credit cards on file.

Before these changes, users could send messages to strangers unless those people set restricted privacy settings, something Facebook says most people don't do. Under the new system, users can message anyone regardless of their privacy settings; the messages end up in a folder labeled "other," which is designed to catch spam. That's where the money comes in. To bypass the recipients "other" folder, users can pay $1 to make sure their messages end up in a person's main inbox. (This is not currently available for Pages, only individual Facebook members).

There is no way to opt out of this newly updated Messages system. The only way not to get messages from strangers is to block them after the fact. While those who don't want to message strangers may find the $1 messaging service odd, there are others who may find the option handy.

So a new method by facebook to empty your wallets? Will you use the service? Do you hate it? like it?

Google Maps overshadows Apple Maps on iPhone

Months after it was booted out of Apple's iOS platform, Google Maps finally returned to the iPhone via a new Google Maps app optimized for iPhone 5, the latest iteration of Apple's popular smartphone.

Google Maps' return came amid continued criticism of Apple for its glitch-ridden iOS 6 Maps solution, which comes pre-installed on its iOS 6 operating system.

"Navigate your world with Google Maps, now available for iPhone. Get comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps with built-in Google local search, voice guided turn-by-turn navigation, public transit directions, Street View and more," read the Google Maps app's description in the app store for iOS.

It said iPhone owners can use Google Maps to "discover great places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and reviews from people you trust."

While the app is optimized for the iPhone 5, Google said it is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation and up) and iPad, and requires iOS 5.1 or later.

Circles around Apple Maps

Tech site CNET lauded the new Google Maps for iOS for a brilliant interface, turn-by-turn directions, and Street View; accurate location search; and extensive points-of-interest.

However, CNET also noted there is no dedicated iPad app, and the 3D satellite view requires switching to the Google Earth app.

Still, it said Google again "sets the standard for what mobile navigation should be and more."

"Absolutely, it runs circles around the much-lampooned Apple Maps. Yet, it's also vastly improved over not only the Google Maps we had back in iOS 5, but also the version accessible through the iOS browser," it added.
App features

Google said the app's features include:
  • Find addresses, places and businesses around the world with Google local search.
  • Discover places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and local reviews.
  • Sign in to sync your searches, directions, and favorite places between your computer and your phone.
  • Voice guided, turn-by-turn driving directions.
  • Find your way by train, bus, subway or walking directions.
  • Access live traffic information in cities across the world.

Also, Google said its Street View and imagery allow 360-degree panoramas of places around the globe, along with high-resolution satellite imagery of locations around the world.

HTC One X Plus VS Samsung Galaxy S3 Complete Comparison

HTC One X Plus and Samsung Galaxy S III (I9300) of samsung mobiles fall in the same price range while both are extremely expensive and luxurious cell phones. As they stand head-to-head, we noticed a number of variations between both contenders. On one side, Samsung S III ranks higher while at the other end X Plus has features to occupy more weight. So let’s discuss how both devices actually differentiate on their own end.

Storage

The internal storage of both smartphones does not have much amount of difference. However, Samsung provides three storage versions to the users: 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. On the other hand, HTC has offered only two storage versions such as 32 GB minimum and 64 GB as maximum built-in storage. Beyond these slight storage differences, the major difference that makes the Samsung S III successor in the microSD card slot. Regretfully, X Plus misses microSD card slot which may come as a disaster for the handset. As compared to X Plus, S3 allows extendible memory of up to 64 GB with its microSD card slot.

Winner : Samsung S3

Battery Life

Again, S III is a better smartphone in terms of battery life comparison. Galaxy S III gives more than 21 hours of talk time and a stand-by time of 590 hours. HTC X Plus does only half of S III and allows a talk time of just 12 hours with 360 hours on standby. For the same price range, you would surely prefer a Galaxy phone.

Winner : Samsung S3

DLNA Support

One feature which Samsung SIII (I9300) lacks in, is the DLNA support.
While, HTC by providing the DLNA support in X Plus lets you conveniently share the data such as music files and videos through the Wi-Fi. It also allows the users to stream and watch videos on the internet right on their cell phone. So this time, for DLNA feature, the winner is HTC X Plus.

Winner : HTC One X Plus

Processor Speed

Another feature which makes HTC One X Plus a better cell phone is its faster processer. It has a Quad core CPU with a speed of 1.7 GHz, we have witnessed just a few cell phone of such speed. Samsung S III (I9300) also runs fast with a Quad core CPU, however the processor’s speed is 1.4 GHz.

Winner : HTC One X Plus

Display

Samsung S 3 has signature touch screen of Samsung: Super AMOLED capacitive touch screen. On the other hand, HTC One X Plus cell phone has a Super LCD 2 Capacitive touch screen. Both of these touch screens look stunning. However, Samsung has produced a better on-screen experience as far as visibility and color saturation are concerned. If, however, we take the brightness into account, then HTC’s Super LCD 2 is the clear winner.

Winner : HTC One X Plus

Secondary Camera

Both of these cell phones have the same 8 MP primary cameras which is stunner. However when it comes to real contest, the 1.9 MP secondary camera of S3 beats the 1.6 MP camera of One Plus.

Winner : Samsung Galaxy S3

So Concluding everything its a tie with 3-3 but its you who decides the final either you want a Better display , processor and DLNA ( HTC One X + ) Or Better Secondary camera , storage and battery life ( Samsung Galaxy S3)

Samsung Executive Uses Apple Gadgets At Home!

Korean mobile maker Samsung's chief strategy officer Young Sohn has said that he is a big fan of Apple products and continues to use them at home.

"I use a Mac, actually, at home," he said during an interview with MIT Technology Review.

"I've always used Mac, an iPhone, and an iPad. I also have the Galaxy. So I'm a great example. If you look at the strengths of Apple, in a way it's not the product per se. It's that consumers like their ecosystem such as iCloud," he said.

"I like that my family 6,000 miles away in Korea is able to see my schedule and see all of my contacts and photos. It is sticky, but it is a proprietary architecture," he added.

According to Mashable, his remarks came while discussing the need for Samsung to build a better ecosystem to connect its products.

Sohn, who joined Samsung in August to bolster innovation at the company, also went so far as to call Apple a 'very innovative' company, the report said.

Smart launches iPhone 5 in Phillipines , Prices Revealed!

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) officially launched the iPhone 5 in the Philippines through a jampacked event held last night at the Resorts world Manila today , December 14.

At the event, Smart of course featured the iPhone 5 and presented the first 5 owners of the wildly popular handset. The iPhone 5 is the latest iPhone from Apple, but of course you already know this. The iPhone 5 has a 4-inch screen, bigger than the screen on previous iPhone models. I find the bigger screen to be a most welcome change since the 3.5-inch screen on the previous versions are too limiting. The iPhone 5 is also thinner, lighter and faster. The design is still fantastic and I find it to be the most attractive iPhone yet. It runs iOS 6, the current version of Apple’s mobile operating system. It’s better in most respects, except for the Maps app that has been much maligned and made fun of. Luckily, that Maps app can now be replaced with the recently released Google Maps for the iPhone.

There are three variants of the iPhone 5: the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants. On prepaid, the 16GB variant is priced at P33,600, the 32GB at P38,780, and the 64GB at P43,950. The 16GB and 32GB variants are free on iPhone Plan 2499 and Unli Data Plan 3000. If you prefer the lower iPhone Plan 999, you will need to shell out P19,000 for the 16GB variant, P24,000 for the 32GB variant, and P29,000 for the 64GB variant.

Rovio's Angry Birds movie coming in 2016

'Angry Birds' will roll out wordwide as a full-length movie in the summer of 2016. John Cohen ('Despicable Me') will produce the movie spin-off of the killer app, announced its creators from Finnish studio Rovio Entertainment.

Rovio Entertainment disclosed this as it released 30 new levels for the game to mark the third anniversary of the mega-hit franchise, Mashable said.

"With ('Despicable Me' producer John Cohen's) hands-on producer background and (former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel's) expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system," Rovio's CEO Mikael Hed said.

"Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things,” he added.

Mashable said the film is to show in mid-2016 with Cohen taking over production and Maisel - a senior adviser to Rovio - as executive producer.

It added no details about the plot have been revealed so far, though Rovio "plans to produce and finance the movie to avoid losing 'creative control' at the hands of a movie studio."

Cohen had also had a hand in movies like Hop, Ice Age, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who, Robots and Ice Age: The Meltdown.

Launched in 2009, the 'Angry Birds' app quickly became one of the most successful ever. Rovio Entertainment claims that its game has been downloaded more than a billion times to date. Let's see what Angry Birds Movie can do!

Blackberry 10 L-Series Images Leaked! EXPOSED

RIM's BlackBerry 10 operating system is not set to release until January, but photos of a smartphone that reportedly runs the new OS have been leaked online already.

RIM is set to launched BB10 and unveil new handsets on Jan. 30. While RIM has provided developers and reporters with some hands-on time with BB10, few details about its new smartphones have been released. The company has seeded the touch-screen BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha and the QWERTY BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha C to developers to try out the OS, though.

The leaked photos  show the BlackBerry device powered off, so no glimpse at the OS, but they do show off the grey-black bezel attached to the top and bottom of the phone, adding length to the device a la iPhone 5 . It also boasts the same rounded corners as Apple's latest offering, but includes slots for a micrsoSIM and microSD card, hidden by the rear cover. Underneath the removable piece of plastic is an NFC antenna, as well as an 1,800mAh batter, based on the photos.

The L-Series seems to include the play/pause toggle button, hiding in the middle of the volume rocker on the right side of the phone, while micro-USB and micro-HDMI ports balance out the left side.

During her 13 years as a top Google executive, Mayer played a key role in building the company’s Gmail. The service was a novelty when it began in 2004 and with Mayer’s help it transformed into a trend-setting service that surpassed the early leads of rival offerings from Yahoo and Microsoft.

According to the paper, Yahoo Mail is the third largest web mail service in the world, behind Google and Hotmail, but it is the leading service in the United States.

Mayer, a former Google executive who is widely admired in Silicon Valley for her Web product savvy, is moving to revitalize Yahoo's various Web products and reverse years of declining revenue.

She has said her top priority is to create a coherent mobile strategy for Yahoo.
